S.D. Senate Bill to Ban Most Abortions

Legislation meant to prompt a national legal battle targeting Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion, was approved Wednesday by the South Dakota Senate, moving the bill a step closer to final passage.

The measure, which would ban nearly all abortions in the state, now returns to the House, which passed a different version earlier. The House must decide whether to accept changes made by the Senate, which passed its version 23-12.

The bill, carrying a penalty of up to five years in prison, would make it a felony for doctors or others to perform abortions.

How's that old Russian saying go?
If you wake up in the morning without feeling any pain, you know you're dead.

    I think that's it.

At this point, I'm thinking that might be preferable.

    Ouch.

Ed Bacon died! I just went to the store to get a soda and saw his picture across the front of the Daily News. I was momentarily excited and then I thought, "Now why would his picture be across the front of that rag?" Of course, then it dawned on me that there would only be one reason for this 95 year-old man to be on the cover and I saw the years listed. I was just explaining to Alex last week who he was and the day before yesterday my mom gave me back a book I loaned her two years ago that had a key mention of him. I know I shouldn't be shocked--I mean, 95 and all--but still, I can't help it. God, RIP old man.

First Amare Solomon and now Edmund Bacon--my world is all askew!

You'd think it was The Onion
"It may be the oddest tale to emerge from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Armed dolphins, trained by the US military to shoot terrorists and pinpoint spies underwater, may be missing in the Gulf of Mexico.

Experts who have studied the US navy's cetacean training exercises claim the 36 mammals could be carrying 'toxic dart' guns. Divers and surfers risk attack, they claim, from a species considered to be among the planet's smartest. The US navy admits it has been training dolphins for military purposes, but has refused to confirm that any are missing."

Pussy Galore -- please post widely!
3 rescued cats need good homes in Philadelphia area!

Very beautiful and loving male, short-haired Siamese, fixed with shots, under two-years-old. Gets along very well with other cats. Tolerant of dogs. Not demanding about food but often requires a warm lap to sit in!

Two male short-hair kittens, approximately eleven weeks, one all gray and one orange tiger, unfixed and need shots. Found in a sealed in a box left in the sun for several hours. Very sweet. Quite shy at first but now very adventurous and playful. Likes other cats and dogs.

    Pictures available. Must have references.

10th Annual Books Through Bars Pack-a-Thon
    Don't forget peoples--

    (Reposting BTB announcement)

Over Memorial Day Weekend, we will be hosting BTB's 10th Pack-A-Thon. Last
year, we sent out more than 1,000 packages of books over this weekend. Will you
    help us beat this record?

Here's what you need to know:
-We pack books 10 am - 10 pm on Saturday May 28th and Sunday May 29th.

-You don't need to participate for 24 hours, but we do ask that folks commit to
at least 4 hours. [This is particularly important if you are not an experienced
    packer.]

-We encourage you to raise money to help cover the cost of participation. If
you raise $30 for each hour you participate, you will cover the cost of the
postage on the packages you're sending out. We know that fundaising can be
intimidating, so talk to Barbara, Nicole or Jarf if you're not sure where to
    start.

-We will tons of food! Local restaurants donate meals for lunch and dinner, and
BTB supporters provide snacks throughout the day. We usually have a little
party at the end of each day.

-We're also selling raffle tickets for prizes that will be drawn each hour of
the Pack-A-Thon. Raffle tickets are $1 each. In addition, we will have two
drawings open to participants--one for everyone that packs books, and another
for people who pack for at least 12 of the 24 hours.

If you want to participate, let me know and I'll get you all of the info you
need. If you can't participate but would like so support the 10th Pack-A-Thon,
consider sponsoring me. I'll be in it for the full 24 hours.

    Thanks,
    Nicole
